Chess Game

A full chess engine with a visual interface. Play against another player, challenge an AI opponent, or watch two AIs battle it out! All standard chess rules are supported including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion. Click on a piece to see valid moves highlighted in green (captures in red), then click on a destination square to make your move.

Ported from the original Python version. You can play against the classic Minimax engine with alpha-beta pruning and position-based evaluation, or challenge a connectome-inspired neural brain. The game tracks all moves and detects checkmate and stalemate conditions.

The featured 🪰 Fruit Fly Brain AI runs a biologically-inspired neural simulation: board positions are encoded into sensory neuron currents, propagated through a leaky-integrator network mapped from real fruit fly connectome wiring, and decoded from motor neuron activity into candidate moves. Watch the little fly perched beneath the board ponder like The Thinker, puffing on a pipe with candidate moves emerging in its thought bubble before decisively locking in its move. Connectome architecture and wiring are based on research mapping the complete male fruit fly brain: [Google Research], [Cell Paper], and [Janelia Connectome Data].
